Aurora Borealis is the phenomenon that makes people from all over world travel to Abisko during the darkest winter months. Abisko is of several reasons one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. The nick-name "The blue hole" describes one of the reasons very well. Because due to the mountains around Abisko the sky is very often clear from clouds, and a clear sky is necessary if you want to see the Auroras.
To be able to see the Nothern Lights you have to be outside, as much as you can, when it's dark outside. you can book several activities through us to hunt the Northern Lights (see below). During all these activities you will be companied by guides who will take you to the best places to see the Northern Lights in Abisko.
Snowmobiling Northern light
Sit in a sled and the guide drives you up towards the mountains. Surrounded by total darkness you stop to view the auroras or the night sky and drink something warm.

Northern light snowshoe walk
A walk into the wilderness around Abisko is a great way to experience the aurora. We start the tour with walking up into the sub-arctic forest. During our hike we stop and learn about some of the unique nature in the area. After about 45 minutes we reach one of the best aurora watching places in Abisko, just in time for the best hour of aurora activity. While waiting for the northern light to appear we make a fire and talk about the aurora and how to improve your chances of seeing it. Arranged by Abisko Guide.

Aurora hunting tour
We travel by car to get where the current weather conditions will give the best opportunity to see the aurora. The journey can take us in any direction, to the east, toward the cold and dry climate of the inland or perhaps to the west, toward the coastal regions of Norway. Join one of Lights over Lapland’s professional photographers for an opportunity to see and photograph the aurora borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.
